about

CATT grew up in a three-house village in northern Germany surrounded by forests and classical music. A grand piano has always been part of the family home, she played it and sang before she even learned to speak. Trombone and trumpet arrived early at her musical scene as well, CATT learned to play them in the church choir and now transforms them into exciting soundscapes in her playful pop songs.
In 2014 she moved to Berlin, where after studying piano and music production, she found herself in the middle of Germany's indie and pop world within months. She accompanied many well-known artists and bands on tour and in the studio on keyboards, brass and background vocals. In 2018, she gave her first sign of life as CATT with her self-released song "Moon" and has since inspired audiences live and in front of the stereos.

On October 15, CATT's first re-work EP will be released on Listenrecords: the "Why, Why (Acoustic EP)" includes five of the tracks from their debut album from November last year in new versions.

In the wintry lockdown mood of 2020's end, CATT follows her impulse to realize a long-standing idea: She writes a string arrangement for her song "How Can I Become" and records it a few weeks later: "To arrange one of my songs for strings has been a wish of mine for a long time. To be able to realize this with Tim Tautorat and wonderful musicians in the Hansa Studios in Berlin had a very special energy, especially at that time!"

But more developed from this one song in the warm atmosphere of the historic studio.
The coming together of musicians in the same space after months of being sequestered inspired CATT and co-producer Tim Tautorat to translate even more Why, Why songs into acoustic versions. Some of the recordings were captured by videographer Michèl M. Almeida in wonderfully out-of-time images.

Five songs will be released now digitally, on CD and 10" vinyl. In each of the minimalist versions, arranged by CATT herself. Her skill as a songwriter and composer emerges as clearly as her multi-faceted, comforting voice.

"Again" was the starting point of CATT's journey toward her debut album, "Why, Why," last May. The song has since been streamed millions of times on Spotify alone. The vocal version of this track now comes completely without instruments - following a piano intro: Layer upon layer, CATT's voice lays down, in looped chorus with itself, delicate in places, powerful in others.

In the piano version of "Shades," CATT's characteristic piano playing takes her place alongside her voice: it begins minimalistically, feels its way forward, strikes moods, and ends up almost gospel-like.

For the "We Could Have Been" trio version, CATT invited musicians from the live band on violin and guitar to accompany her on piano. The new instrumentation gives the song lightness and melancholy in equal parts and creates anticipation to experience CATT's music with a band lineup.

The mystical brass version of "Surface", on the other hand, is interpreted by CATT alone with her instruments: Her colorful trumpet, trombone and horn playing, which always causes surprise and excitement among concert audiences, here it enters a dance-like dialogue with piano and voice.

Finally, a string quintet revels in warming nostalgia. "We have a past, I have a past," CATT sings, opening this timeless string version of her track "How Can I Become," the 'finale' of her question-begging debut. Here the Berlin artist comes full circle to what began as the first notes on paper during the cold and isolated end-of-year days of 2020 in her Berlin apartment.
